State of Decay 3 Lives – Alpha Test Begin in May, Signups Are Now Open

After years of total silence, Undead Labs has announced that State of Decay 3 still lives and will begin Alpha testing shortly. The news came via the official website with the following brief message to the community:

You’ve all been super patient, and we hope you’re as excited as we are that the moment has arrived to start sharing State of Decay 3 with you. We want to be upfront that this first wave of playtests will be limited, but we plan on sharing insights and feedback with everyone as we go, and if you don’t get into this first group, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year.

Registrations are now open on this page. The developer didn’t clarify at this time whether Alpha testing is available only on PC, only on Xbox Series S|X, or on both platforms for which the game was confirmed. However, given that the first tests will begin in just a few weeks, more clarity should be provided shortly. Meanwhile, Undead Labs shared a new “Pre-Alpha/In-engine” screenshot.

There’s also an official announcement video in which Franchise Co-Creator and Principal Art Director Brant Fitzgerald explained:

Over the last few years, most of the team has been doing updates for State of Decay 2. The rest of us have been creating cool [bleep] for State of Decay 3. We’ve been keeping a close eye on what you liked about State of Decay 2 and what you didn’t. We’ve read your feedback on Discord. We’ve watched your gameplay clips and live streams on YouTube. Starting next month, we’ll be hosting a series of Alpha playtests with the community. Listen, I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you, but I can say that it will feature 4-player co-op, some new base building and resource strategies, and a whole lot of combat.

State of Decay 3 was announced in July 2020, at a time when it was clearly still in concept phase. A couple of years later, now-retired Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer started hyping the game as one of his most anticipated first-party titles. However, a few days later, a Kotaku report brought to light development issues that had kept the game in pre-production, as well as allegations of mismanagement and sexism.
